Purpose of the Global Health Symposium

Across three days of presentations, rapid-fire talks and workshops, one message resonated clearly: heatwaves are not just meteorological events - they manifest as a major health crisis and is a matter of justice. Addressing heat and health requires interdisciplinarity to be able to unpack the problem and create health sector preparedness. Further, we need political will to put these solutions into practice.

Personal feelings on the event

This event was truly one of the highlights of my year. It is rare to have an entire week dedicated to a topic as specific as extreme heat and its effects on health. As thermal physiologist, I don’t often get the opportunity to engage with other research perspectives, including qualitative approaches, climate justice frameworks, and field-based research. This event changed that. Bringing together early-career and established researchers from around the world, it created a uniquely rich environment for learning, exchange, and collaboration. The workshops in particular were invaluable, allowing us to share our respective expertise and explore new angles on one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time. And to top it all off, the entire week-long event was completely free of charge.
